We understand that coming to a new church can be nerve-wracking, especially if you’ve had difficult experiences. We want to assure you that our community is dedicated to creating a safe and supportive space for everyone, everyone, everyone. We gathered a few commonly asked questions and answers to assist you in the faith journey.
What is a typical worship worship?
A typical service at TUCC lasts about 60 minutes. It includes a warm welcome, uplifting music blending traditional hymns and contemporary songs, scripture readings, prayers, and a sermon rooted in faith and real-world challenges.
On select Sundays, normally once a month, we share in open communion, where everyone, everyone, everyone is welcome. The service concludes with a blessing and a call to live out Christ’s love in the world.
Can you tell me about children’s activities?
At TUCC, children are always WELCOME, just as they are! We embrace kids of all ages and abilities, including those with ADHD and other forms of neurodivergence, recognizing them as a vital part of our community. To help children feel comfortable and engaged in worship, we provide activity bags with fun items to use during the service, as well as a dedicated space for kids in the worship area. We celebrate the joyful noises and unique energy that children bring, knowing they reflect the beauty and diversity of God’s creation.
Coming Soon:
We will be offering the Our Whole Lives (OWL) curriculum, a comprehensive program that explores the intersection of faith, human sexuality, justice, and racism much like the stories and lessons found in the Bible. This curriculum embraces these topics with honesty, inclusivity, and respect, helping participants of all ages develop a deeper understanding of themselves, their relationships, and their faith.
What time does the service start?
Our service is held on Sunday afternoons at 2 PM in person at First Christian Church (DOC) on 627 Paul W Bryant Drive in Tuscaloosa. For those unable to attend in person, the service is also live-streamed on Facebook so everyone can join in worship, wherever they are.
What do I wear?
Most of us are very casual with what we wear. Some of our members wear jeans and a t-shirt and others feel more comfortable in slacks and a button up. Rest easy that whatever you choose to wear, you’ll be welcomed.
Will you ask for my money?
Wohoo, that is a personal topic.
Our service includes a moment of gratitude, but there is never an expectation to contribute. We understand this can be a stumbling block for many, so we strive to keep the focus on Christ and Christ alone. However, we also believe it is a joy to love and serve the church in every way possible, including sharing our resources for the Kin-dom of God. We maintain a tight budget that maximizes opportunities to serve God and make a meaningful impact in our community.
What is the United Church of Christ (UCC)?
The United Church of Christ (UCC) is a Protestant Christian denomination formed in 1957, with origins rooted in five distinct U.S. traditions: Christian, Reformed, Congregational, Evangelical, and Afro-Christian. Together, these traditions shaped a church known for its inclusiveness, progressive theology, and steadfast commitment to social justice. The UCC was the first historically white denomination to ordain an African-American, the first to ordain a woman, the first to ordain an openly gay man, and the first Christian church to affirm the right of same-gender couples to marry. We were at the forefront of the anti-slavery movement and the Civil Rights movement. Our response to the demands of our faith is woven into the history of our country.
